Cologneo Campus | Cologne

Conversion of former industrial spaces

Our four subprojects form part of the Cologneo Campus in Cologne’s Mülheim district. The development taking place here between the Mülheimer Hafen port area and Deutz-Mülheimer Strasse will form an attractive, varied quarter for living and working, businesses and the creative industries. Sophisticated urban modernity will be thoughtfully combined with industrial charm on the former site of Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz, a multinational corporation that wrote the story book for German industry in the late 18th century. In addition to building new, high-quality structures, we will preserve the old halls that still stand alongside other jewels of the industrial heritage by modernising them and giving them a new use. The sub-projects that are currently being planned and developed are listed below.

Carriage halls (MI4, A)

These halls were once used to build the carriages for the Wuppertal Suspension Railway and feature a striking roof structure. With some of the halls now bearing listed heritage status, all will be preserved in full and converted to new use. A type of “market hall” will be developed as a co-working and open-space concept, with multi-use areas and creative workshops for a range of users.

Facts & Figures

  • Plot: 5,588 m²
  • Gross floor area: approx. 3900 m² (commercial)
  • Project status: in planning

Multi-storey car park and offices (MI4- B)

The car park will adjoin the carriage halls and also include office storeys. The new building will offer plenty of parking spaces and protect the quarter against traffic noise from the nearby Zoobrücke bridge. Infrastructure facilities and commercial units are planned for the ground floor.

Facts & Figures

  • Plot: 7,215 m²
  • Gross floor area: approx. 26,100 m² (commercial & parking garage)
  • Project status: in planning

Office building north - (MI5)

The site directly borders the open space of the Quartiersplatz square. The new five-storey, high-calibre building will provide modern office spaces with upscale amenity value. The distinguishing features of its modern architecture will include sustainable materials, a facade with large-scale glazing, an inner courtyard and a green roof.

Facts & Figures

  • Plot: 4,936 m²
  • Gross floor area: approx. 12,000 m² (commercial)
  • Project status: under construction

The former industrial warehouse, built around 1908, received its whimsical name due to the ingenious interplay of a triangular ground plan, a radially conceived construction and the rounded atrium in the interior. The listed three-storey steel skeleton building with a plain clinker brick façade is extended by a ring-shaped staggered storey while preserving the building fabric. The openly designed ground floor and the atrium above it with surrounding access areas would be ideally suited for modern office use.

  • Plot: 4,174 m²
  • Gross floor area: approx. 8,700 m² (commercial)
  • Project status: in planning
